Luis Gomez, the first owner, built the Gomez Mill House as a trading
post on his 6500 acre enterprise along the Hudson River in Orange
County, NY. A colonial leader of early Jewish America, Luis Gomez
and his decedents contributed to the founding and building of America
well into the 21st Century.

Acker

Woflert Acker,
Revolutionary War Patriot and Entrepreneur
Wolfert Acker bought the Gomez Mill House in 1772 and added
the elegant second story made from bricks baked in kilns on the
property. His political leadership and commercial enterprise helped
build Newburgh into a thriving new American town.

William H. Armstrong,
Gentleman Farmer , Conservationist
William Henry Armstrong and his wife Maddie were
given the Gomez Mill House in 1862 as a wedding present by his
parents who had purchased the property in 1840. The Armstrongs
planted orchards with local varieties of fruit and landscaped
the property with plants and trees indigenous to New York.

Dard Hunter,
Artisan, Craftsman and Historian
The great paper historian and paper craftsman Dard Hunter bought
the Gomez Mill House property in 1912. He built his first paper
mill there and produced some of his first books while there. The
Dard Hunter Mill at the site is now an icon to papermakers throughout
the world.

Gruening
1887-1925

Martha Gruening,
Social Activist
As a Libertarian and social activist, Martha Gruening fought for
womens rights, workers rights, and civil rights. She was
a founder of the NAACP and a prolific speaker and author on mining
conditions, injustices against African-Americas, and the plight
of the working class. In 1918 she bought Mill House to establish
and run a Libertarian School at the site.
